How should Rangers line-up against Hamilton?

With only a few days left until the league season kicks off at home to Hamilton there is plenty of debate surrounding Mark Warburton’s team selection. Nine new faces, in addition to a squad which served the manager so well last season, has created a raft of selection "problems" that have left supporters wondering just how the Gers will line up on Saturday lunchtime.

The team here at GTBFO are no different and have their own opinions on how we should line up and both Callum Hamilton & James Black give their thoughts on what they think is the right starting XI as Rangers look to stop Celtic winning a sixth consecutive title.

CALLUM: Mark Warburton says that Rangers are ready for Hamilton and the chase to the top of the Scottish Premier League table. Celtic have got few players in early and are distracted with Europe, so making a good start is absolutely essential. Warburton also says he's desperately trying to get in a centre-back and possibly a striker before the game, however, so we'll have to see.

Of course, in reality both are probably true. We need a new centre-back more than anything, but since whoever it is could well be a free transfer, they're unlikely to actually be able to play. Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson should start in the centre given Clint Hill's horrorshow against Burnley.

The rest of the back five picks itself (although Matt Gilks looks like he might be able to put at least some pressure on Wes Foderingham in goal as the season goes on.) Ahead of them, Joey Barton must surely start, and while we'd like to see Jordan Rossiter more, it's probably more likely that we'll get Andy Halliday alongside him for now.

Barrie McKay appears to remain our best player and should be the first name on the team-sheet, so should start on the left. Meanwhile, Kenny Miller hasn't looked great in pre-season, so Martyn Waghorn should start centrally with Michael O'Halloran, who has impressed recently, starting on the right.

The real question is the number 10 spot. Niko Kranjcar is clearly the best option there, but whether he'll be considered fit enough for a start against Hamilton remains to be seen. On the other hand, Harry Forrester has looked poor, and Jason Holt is injured. That leaves a good opening for Josh Windass, and having been so impressive, he should probably start, with Kranjcar coming off the bench around the 60 minute mark once the space has opened up for him.

The line-up is still a hugely strong one, and while fitness and, well, the form of Rob Kiernan mean it's not perfect, Hamilton are a lot closer to Motherwell than they are to Burnley. It should be a comfortable win for us.

JAMES: Despite the omni-shambles that was the first half of the Burnley friendly Mark Warburton’s side have had a fairly succesful start to the season after getting through the Betfred Cup group stage with an unblemished record. One or two players have done themselves no chance of staking a claim for a regular start after a number of impressive performances and they might just have forced Mark Warburton to rip-up his plans.

The back five tend to pick themselves, barring a last-minute signing, and Wes Foderingham should line up behind James Tavernier, Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan and Lee Wallace. Clint Hill, Matt Gilks and Lee Hodson have come in over the summer but it’s difficult to see any of them immediately coming right in to start.

The midfield three is where Mark Warburton faces his toughest call. Does he immediately throw Joey Barton, Niko Kranjcar and Jordan Rossiter in? Does Josh Windass’ early performances merit a start if he shakes off an injury worry? Should Jason Holt and Andy Halliday retain their places after a successful debut season, and in Halliday’s case a very impressive pre-season? Off the back of the Betfred Cup games Joey Barton is a first pick. The ex-Newcastle & QPR man has already made an impact on the Rangers support and his undoubted ability has shone through in his limited appearances so far. Barton and England U19 captain Jordan Rossiter are very similar styles of player so I expect they will rotate throughout the season as the holding midfielder.

A little further forward, Niko Kranjcar and Andy Halliday will make up the rest of the midfield. Kranjcar is still struggling a little for fitness but has more than enough quality to be a key player even when not fully up to speed. Andy Halliday was the one player almost everyone expected to make way but his performances in the Betfred cup have made it incredibly difficult not to pick him. With Josh Windass and Jason Holt both getting over knocks it might just give Halliday a chance to lay down a marker and make himself very difficult to drop when the rest are fit.

Like the defence the front three should have a very familiar look to it as Barrie McKay and Michael O’Halloran start out wide with last season’s top goalscorer Martyn Waghorn leading the line. McKay is now arguably the first name on the team-sheet every week and there’s nothing I can see changing that for the foreseeable future. O’Halloran, like Andy Halliday, has put in a number od strong performances and is looking much more like the player that attracted Rangers’ interest in the first place.
