Nikola Katic is a player that few of us will have heard of up until recently, let alone seen in action before he completed his move to Rangers yesterday.
The Croatian international comes from the unfashionable mid-table outfit of Slaven Belupo, but a video compiled from scouting footage shows some of his defensive work over last season and what he might bring to the side.
While he’s still to be tested in Scotland, it looks like as well as Katic’s giant frame, he also possesses some fine defensive instincts as well as a desire to get forward and spray passes around the pitch.
Katic seems likely to form a new centre-back partnership with Connor Goldson, who was announced today, and the two defenders are very much in the same mould as each other - all-rounders who boast physicality, technique and pace without particularly excelling in any one area.
It might seem an unlikely partnership, but the quality of both players seems in little doubt. And, well, Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso made perfect sense, and we know how that one turned out...
