St. Mirren 2-3 Rangers: Fantastic second half performance secures comeback win for Gers

Jay Mansfield

Three second half goals capped a remarkable turnaround for a much-changed Rangers side at the Paisley 2021 Stadium tonight in their penultimate Development League fixture. With several regulars missing the very young ‘Gers saw two first-half strikes disallowed before falling to a 2-0 deficit to their hosts by the break.

Following a double half-time switch and tactical change, Graeme Murty’s side came out for the second half looking to get on the front foot and get an early goal to give themselves hope of turning the tie around and they didn’t have long to wait. A foul on Jordan Gibson just a minute into the second period saw the Light Blues awarded a penalty kick which Max Ashmore coolly fired home and give the the Swifts a real chance of getting back on level terms.

Just under twenty minutes later the scores were level as Andy Dallas drove into the Saints box, showing some fantastic determination, before firing low beyond the hosts’ keeper. Rangers second half performance had been much improved from the first half and the equaliser was well deserved.

The Gers continued to press and probe St. Mirren and finally go their reward seven minutes from the end when substitute Serge Atayaki volleyed home from close ranger after Jamie Barjonas’ lobbed pass. Jordan Gibson, who had done fantastically well throughout, hit the post before the ball fell to Barjonas to set Atayaki up as the Congolese winger continued his run of impressive form and sealed the win.
