Joey Barton to be allowed back to Rangers - then leave on a free transfer

Joey Barton's Rangers situation is likely to be resolved by a free transfer in January, according to claims in the Daily Mail.

The paper claims that Barton will have his suspension ended to allow him to train with the kids, before heading away on a free transfer when the January window opens.

We presume they mean 'mooted' at the end there. Can't get the subs these days.

Anyway, this is probably the best situation for all concerned. There's been some bizarre revisionism over this recently, as Barton, while quite clearly a rocket, was also pretty poor in all of the games he played and didn't even look technically up to the standard, let alone physically. There's a lot wrong with this Rangers team, and a past-it blowhard (in more ways than one) hobbling around the midfield is not going to fix it.

Hopefully, with the free wages, we can do a bit more business in January too. If the squad needs major surgery (and it might) it's unlikely to be a job that can be completed mid-season, but we're expecting us to make at least one relatively major move.

Of course, whether Mark Warburton will still be around to make it is quite another matter...
