Exclusive: Billy Gilmour to sign for Chelsea next week

After months of speculation, 15-year-old midfielder Billy Gilmour will head down to London next week to sign with Premier League leaders Chelsea and kick-off his career as a professional.

Gilmour, who only broke into Rangers’ U20 squad at the end of 2016, has been tipped for the very top and will join the Stamford Bridge side in the summer when he turns 16. Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson has confirmed a deal is in place for the wonderkid with Rangers set to land £500k upfront in addition to benefiting from any future transfer.

Despite only being 15, Gilmour has made 14 appearances for Graeme Murty’s Development Squad, scoring once, as well as regularly featuring for Billy Kirkwood’s U17s as they chase a place in next season’s UEFA Youth League.

With a host of top European clubs including Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Arsenal chasing his signature Gilmour has decided his future lies with Antonio Conte’s side and will likely join up with Chelsea’s under-18 side at their Cobham base.

Rangers also made an offer to keep the wonderkid at Ibrox however the opportunity to work with some of the best players and coaches in the world has proven too strong a draw for him.
