This move may have been planned for some time.

Saido Berahino's move to Rangers seemed like a fantasy. But according to the Scottish Sun, who are fairly reliable when it comes to the SPFL, we're definitely interested and looking to make it happen.

We discussed in another article, which you can read below, why that wasn't such a mad idea, and how it could work out best for all parties (well, apart from West Brom, but with the greatest of respect, they're West Brom, and nobody has the time to worry about West Brom.) The finances might just end up making a move to Rangers work out best.

<div data-anthem-component="readmore" data-anthem-component-data="{"stories":[{"title":"Rangers DO want Saido Berahino - and here's why it could happen","url":"http://www.gotthebattlefeveron.com/2017/1/8/14204196/rangers-saido-berahino-transfer-contract"}]}">

But you no longer need to take our word for it. Because, here's an interview from a few months ago, with former 'super agent' Jon Smith, courtesy of FootballFanCast:

I talked last week about a player who was going between two Premier League clubs.

It broke down because of the fee, it couldn’t be agreed and it was in excess of £20m. They were only two or three million apart. The agent involved was telling me about it and saying that he was annoyed because the player wants to go but the club he’s at wouldn’t let him go because of the fee.

Anyway. so what’s going to happen is that the player is under 24 and in the last year of his contract, so he can give notice in January. If he goes to a club in England he’ll become a tribunal player, which means the fee won’t be far off what it was, but if he goes abroad it’s compensation, which is £400k.

So they’ve already got something lined up where the player will go to Europe for a short time, the club will then sell him back here for half the price having made some money, the player will get twice the money he is going to get, he’ll have hopefully improved and the agent will get roughly £5m.

People will be like, ‘Wow, £5m!?’ but in reality, they’ve saved everybody millions of pounds by doing that. And that’s the role of the agent, beyond looking after the player’s everyday life, that’s where it has come to.

Again, I don’t have a problem with that. They’ve done a damn good job for their client, they’ve been clever, they’ve enhanced his career, enhanced his financial value and they’ve helped the buying club.

Not much was thought of it at the time. However, at the start of the rammy with West Brom, Saido Berahino sacked his then agent Aidy Ward. His replacement appears to be one Dan Fletcher, who has a few other Premier League players on his books. Fletcher used to work for First Artist, which was an agency headed up by... Jon Smith.

We're not saying this is going to happen (and of course Rangers might not even be the European club they're referrring to) but it looks like it might just make sense.

We're expecting Jon Toral to join him in the next few days, although whether that'll be the end of our business for the window, we're not sure. A defensive midfielder would be nice, considering Jordan Rossiter's terrible injury problems this season.

Both players are likely to play a part in the friendly against RB Leipzig later on this month, as we look to make the most of the January break.
Saido Berahino to Rangers wasn't just idle gossip, and it might actually make sense.

Rangers will attempt to sign Saido Berahino from West Brom in the summer, according to the Scottish Sun. The striker's contract expires in the summer and Mark Warburton plans to make his move to convince the striker to leave on a free and head up to Ibrox.

The rumour had been suggested for a while, but it's now been stood up by the media, and from a source that's usually pretty accurate when it comes to Rangers. They've broken quite a few major stories coming out of Ibrox first this season and last.

Of course, just because Rangers will attempt to land Berahino doesn't mean they'll succeed - everybody's well aware that it's a long shot. But it's not as impossible as it might seem at first. Berahino, after all, has just rejected a 60k a week offer from West Brom - so why would he come to Rangers if we can't get anywhere near that figure?

Quite simply, he'd not exactly be coming for the long haul. You just need to take a look at Moussa Dembele (another player who, like Berahino, was linked to a big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur) to see how heading to Glasgow can actually be more lucrative.

Rangers' immediate advantage comes from the fact that as a foreign club, we'd only have to pay around £500k to complete the deal. Any English clubs would have to stump up far more, probably around £8m, which is a risk for a player who has fallen out with his current club and hasn't played much football recently.

As for the wages, Berahino is currently on 20k a week. Rangers can certainly match that at least, and if he comes up to Scotland and does well, he'll soon be attracting serious money offers from down south - particularly as he's already proved himself capable of scoring in the Premier League. If Rangers were to offer him a portion of future transfer profit - as Celtic have likely done with Dembele - then it's probably more lucrative for him to come to Rangers for a short period than move to a Championship or lower-level Premier League club.

Berahino gets a big move and a chunk of money, and Rangers get an excellent player for a period of time and a good profit to reinvest in the squad. It's far from a certainty to happen, but the situation doesn't mean Rangers will find it impossible to compete for his signature. It'll certainly be interesting to see how it develops.

Rangers have completed the loan signing of Emerson Hyndman, according to the Scottish Sun.

Rangers have made their first signing of the January transfer window, and it looks like it will be Bournemouth midfielder Emerson Hyndman, according to The Scottish Sun.

Hyndman, a USA youth international, is a highly-rated youngster with an excellent first touch and range of passing that can operate in a 2 or 3-man midfield, usually as a deeper-lying playmaker. He has, however, often struggled due to his limited physical stature.

Perhaps this is instead of one of our other targets, but it seems obvious to GTBFO that the position we most desperately need to acquire in this window is a defensive midfielder to compensate for Jordan Rossiter's awful fitness record. The fact that our moves have been Jon Toral, Jota and now Hyndman don't exactly bode well that Mark Warburton recognises what the team's problems are.

There's been no official confirmation from the club yet, but we'll let you know when it happens. Toral is expected to join too, likely at the start of next week.
As teams start making moves in the transfer market, we take a look at who was the best, permanent, January window signing since it’s introduction in 2002/03.

Barry Ferguson

Ferguson returned to Rangers in the final minutes of the 2005 January transfer window for a reported £4.5m from Blackburn Rovers and made his re-debut in a 7-1 thumping of Dundee United in the CIS Cup semi final at Hampden. He regained the captaincy that summer and it was like he’d never been away; Ferguson would go on to make 191 appearances in his second stint at Ibrox to add to the 240 he made before trying his luck down south. After making the move back to his boyhood heroes, Ferguson would lift two league titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups as well as captaining Rangers in their first European final since 1972. Ferguson would leave Rangers in 2009 after being stripped of the captaincy following what became known as ‘Boozegate’ but not before earning a place in the club’s Hall of Fame.

Kris Boyd

Record SPL/SPFL goalscorer Boyd moved to Ibrox in January 2006 for £400k from Kilmarnock, where he made his debut the same day Ally McCoist finished his career, and immediately started banging goals in. A debut hat-trick against Peterhead in the Scottish Cup immediately won favour with fans and he never really stopped scoring. 128 goals in 192 appearances in his first spell at the club was a phenomenal record and, although Boyd would often be left out of bigger games, he would almost guarantee a goal against most sides. Boyd, like Ferguson, won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups before joining Middlesbrough in 2010.

When Walter Smith replaced Paul Le Guen a decade ago he immediately moved for Thomson to replace Frenchman Jeremy Clement and got his man for £2m. The combative midfielder initially struggled with injury but quickly made himself a vital part of the team once fit and playing a key role as Smith led his team to a UEFA CUp final. The following season Thomson sustained a horrific knee injury but fought back to fitness to lift a league and League Cup doube in 2009/10. THomson would go on to join Boyd at ‘Boro after making 109 appearances and winning two titles, a Scottish Cup and two League Cups.

Like Thomson, Weir joined Rangers in the immediate aftermath of Walter Smith’s return to the club and would go on to be one of the best signings Smith would make over either of his two spells as manager. When Weir was announced as a Rangers player in January 2007 most fans were not happy with the signing whatsover and felt that at 37, Weir would offer very little. How wrong were we? Playing on until well beyond his 40th birthday, Weir would replace Ferguson as club captain in a trophy-laden four-and-a-half year spell as Ibrox. Three league titles, three League Cups and two Scottish Cups over 231 appearances played a massive part in earning Weir a place in the club’s Hall of Fame.

Another attack minded player(noticed a trend here?), Jota could end up replacing Joe Garner, who is set for three months out after dislocating his shoulder against Celtic.

Rangers have been linked to QPR's Massimo Luongo in the January transfer window.

"Rangers linked with Ballon D'Or nominee" is not a sentence we thought we'd be writing on this website until the summer at least, but clearly we're making a lot of progress under Mr Warburton and Davie Weir.

The target in question is QPR's Massimo Luongo, who is Rangers' next transfer target according to Australia's SBS, with MK Dons and Middlesbrough reported to be in the running too. A skillful Australian defensive midfielder formerly of Tottenham Hotspur and Swindon Town (and yes, he was nominated, look it up.)

Luongo's not really fitted in at QPR since signing, and they have a new manager in Jimmy Floyd Haisselbaink who might not fancy him. So there are two questions here: would he fit, and is it likely?

He'd undoubtedly fit, for sure - he appears to be a very tidy footballer, a key player in the Australia national team and QPR fans seem bemused that he can't seem to get in the side.

Is it likely? Well, he just joined in the summer. For three and a half million pounds. Now, this move is probably an alternative to the now-unlikely-looking deal for Toumani Diagouraga, but surely QPR aren't going to take anywhere near enough of a hit to put him within our price range, even if we are betting that we can sell him for a higher price. Even if they've decided to sell him.

So, to be blunt, we can't really see this happening. We'll keep our eyes open to see if any other media outlet picks this up with their own information or sources, but we'd be surprised.

Rangers are tracking Michael O'Halloran of St. Johnstone, according to the Scottish Sun.

Rangers aren't doing all their shopping in England, if the Scottish Sun is to be believed, which today claimed that we're tracking St. Johnstone's Michael O'Halloran, and are planning to make a bid.

It's hard to say whether this makes too much sense - O'Halloran is a pretty good player, he's not old, and he'd certainly come to us if we made an offer. Yet he's not particularly young either, probably doesn't have too much room for improvement at 25, and is contracted until 2017 so would surely cost a fair bit to get St. Johnstone to part with one of their key players.

There's no suggestion of an imminent bid - just talk of 'tracking', and 'plotting', and to say that Frank McParland has been to watch him a couple of times. Most recently was him featuring in a 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock - maybe we were just scouting our Scottish Cup opponents after the SFA told us the outcome of the draw in advance? Did they not think of that?

Anyway, on a free or very cheap, O'Halloran would be well worth looking at, but he's probably not worth paying serious money for. We'll be surprised if this one comes off. Oh, also, O'Halloran is a boyhood Celtic fan and former youth at the club, which he left when he was 16. So there's that.
