Rangers have confirmed the 18-month loan signing of Jermain Defoe as their third signing of the January window.

We’ve moved pretty quickly to get things done, and the former England striker joins Glen Kamara and Jordan Jones as new additions in this window - although the latter two are unlikely to actually join until summer.

Steven Gerrard said he was “delighted” the striker joined, adding: “He is an exceptionally talented striker and vastly experienced footballer who has scored goals at every club he has played for.”

Steven Davis is the man expected to follow shortly, and he’ll be signing on an initial 6-month loan rather than moving for free immediately. The reasons for that aren’t exactly clear, but Rangers might want to check how many miles he still has left in the tank, while there’s the small matter of his Southampton wages and bonuses to consider too.

Mark Allen also added that getting the players in so early would help them hit the ground running after the January break. Since we have a pretty tough immediate start to our games when we return, hopefully that proves to be the case.
