Rangers reject £3m Tavernier bid as Premier League clubs look to beat looming deadline

‘Derisory’ is the approved cliche, we believe.

Rangers have rejected a £3m bid for James Tavernier from West Bromwick Albion, according to reports in the media.

Tavernier was appointed captain by new boss Steven Gerrard and is a key player in the side, but with the English transfer window closing at 5pm tomorrow, the two Albions of West Bromwich and Brighton and Hove are apparently both keen to make a move.

While the signing of Borja Barisic led some to suggest that Tavernier may be moved forward into a midfield role, that seems unlikely. With Tavernier, Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson and now Barisic, Rangers probably have the best back four in the country and aren’t likely to sell their captain at such short notice - especially for such a low fee.

We’ll see if Rangers’ stance softens, but if 3m is the starting offer, it’s hard to see him going. Even £5m would seem to be a very low amount to get for a player who has been so influential and consistent. We’ll report on any major changes, but we’d say Tavernier is unlikely to be leaving Ibrox this campaign.
