Steven Gerrard has confirmed that James Tavernier will be his captain for the upcoming season.
Asked after the game about the prospect of Tavernier, who wore the armband tonight, keeping it for the remainder of the season, Gerrard instantly confirmed that he would lead the team.
“I’m delighted with him. Not just the performances, the character, the man, the leader. He’s been through some highs and lows here of late but he’s the one who’s been very consistent”, said the Manager.
“The fans like him very much. We’ve been working with him seventeen days and he’s been fantastic in every single department.”
Tavernier, of course, had the armband towards the end of last season when the team imploded, although that may have been due to circumstances well beyond his control.
If there’s one thing you’d expect Gerrard to do, it’s identify the best choice for captain on the pitch. Hopefully Tavernier can repay the faith.
