Rangers have made a new bid for Millwall centre-back Jake Cooper, reportedly at the £3m mark.
Steven Gerrard has already moved to add Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson to form a new-look backline, with Bruno Alves, Russell Martin and David Bates all departing the club.
But it seems that he’s not done yet, and wants to add another physically imposing centre-back to his available options in the form of the 23 year-old defender.
While there are some other areas that could use an upgrade, and we’ve already invested heavily in the defence, it’s certainly one area we need to get right this season. And with few options in the case of injuries, Cooper will help mitigate against any loss of form or fitness from Goldson or Katic.
It could be likely that Katic might not be an automatic starter if the move goes ahead, although it does of course give us the extra option of playing three at the back, too.
Whether Millwall will accept the bid isn’t certain, but they certainly seem to rate Cooper very highly. It’s hard to imagine us paying much more for a centre-back, so we’ll have to hope this one is enough to get the deal done.
