Rangers have opened talks with Liga MX side C.D. Guadalajara over a move for 27-year-old midfielder Carlos Peña, according to the player.

Peña, who is currently on loan at Club León is reported to be set to travel to Glasgow to finalise terms over a move as Pedro Caixinha continues to revamp his squad after last season’s shambles. The midfielder, nicknamed Gullit, has picked up 19 caps for the Mexican national side and appeared for El Tri in the 2014 World Cup and has spent his entire club career in his native country.

A creative midfielder, which Rangers have sorely lacked recently, Peña came to Caixinha’s attention when the Portuguese manager was in charge of Santos Laguna and can play either centrally or on the left of midfield.

It remains to be seen whether he’d qualify for a work permit at the first attempt but, if necessary, should get one on appeal.
