According to reports, Rangers are set to bid for Portuguese central defender Fabio Cardoso as Pedro Caixinha rebuilds his squad ahead of his first full campaign in charge. Cardoso, who spent eight years at Benfica before joining Vitória de Setúbal last summer, has represented the Portuguese national team at various age groups up to under 20 and would cost Rangers around £1.5m.

With Clint Hill, Philippe Senderos and Rob Kiernan all set to leave Ibrox in the summer, Caixinha is looking to strengthen his defensive options as he looks to close the gap to Celtic next season. 23-year-old Cardoso has three years remaining on his Vitória contract but a move to the Scottish Premiership, and a crack at Europa League football, could prove tempting for the centre-back.

Rangers have also been linked with a move for Cardoso’s compatriot Bruno Alves from Serie A side Cagliari however the Gers could face competition from Turkish giants Galatasaray for the veteran defender.
