Rangers thumped Hamilton to book a Scottish Cup semi final place as they scored 6 for the first time since a January 2016 win over Dumbarton.
A fairly dull first half saw very few real goalscoring chances before Martyn Waghorn opened the scoring just after half an hour. Emerson Hyndman should have opened the scoring earlier when Barrie McKay showed fantastic skill down the left to get in behind the Hamilton defence before picking out the American. With the goal at his mercy Hyndman fired straight at a grateful Remi Matthews when it was easier to score.
Kenny Miller then went close when his volley from the edge of the box was tipped onto the bar by Matthews to deny the veteran an outstanding goal. Holt’s pass fell nicely for Miller and he lashed it with his right boot only for Matthews to get a hand to it.
Rangers then opened the scoring a few minutes later when Waghorn coolly slotted home from the penalty spot after Jon Toral was brought down in the area. The Englishman’s penalty sent Matthews the wrong way to give his side the lead.
With the second half just minutes old Rangers doubled their advantage through substitute Joe Garner. Rob Kiernan won a header well, knocking the ball into Garner’s path, before the ex-Preston forward buried the chance from a few yards and give Rangers a comfortable lead.
Jon Toral grabbed a third for Rangers with 15 minutes left when he found half a yard to get a shot away which took a deflection before hitting the back of the net and sealing Rangers’ place in the semi final.
Just minutes later Clint Hill added his name to the scoresheet when he met a corner expertly and bulleted a header beyond Matthews to net his fourth goal for the club. The scoreline propablyy flattered Rangers a little by this point but it wasn’t over.
A quickfire double by Joe Garner turned a comfortable win into a rout as the half-time sub helped himself to a second half hat-trick and give the side a huge confidence boost before next week’s trip to Celtic.
