Spanish midfielder Jon Toral is expected to arrive in Glasgow later today to put the final touches on his loan move from Arsenal. Toral, who has cut short a spell with La Liga side Granada to head to Ibrox, will spend the rest of the season in Glasgow and could even make his move permanent with the player’s current Arsenal deal up in the summer.
During his time with Granada, Toral has struggled to make an impact and has managed only five appearances although he was voted Birmingham City’s Player of the Year for 2015/16; scoring 8 times in 38 appearances, including this spectacular volley which won City’s Goal of the Year award.
A move north won’t be the first time the former Barcelona midfielder has linked up with Mark Warburton after the pair worked together at Brentford in 2014/15. At the time Warburton spoke very highly of the young Catalan, saying:
Toral’s injury history could cause some concern for the Ibrox medical staff, particularly should the club look to offer him a permanent deal in the summer, after a number of surgeries to fix a genetic issue with his knees in his early days with Arsenal however the last time he went under the knife was four years ago and he has had no issues with either knee since, playing two consecutive seasons of Championship football before his ill-fated move to Granada.
If, as expected, a move is confirmed before Mark Warburton’s side travel to Germany for Sunday’s friendly with Red Bull Leipzig then Toral could join fellow loanee Emerson Hyndman in making his debut against the Bundesliga side.
