Wigan are set to secure the signing of Matt Gilks in the next 24 hours after Rangers sealed Jak Alnwick’s signing from Port Vale yesterday. The Championship side are struggling near the foot of the table and are looking to ex-Scotland international Gilks to provide competition for Jakob Haugaard between the sticks; 41-year-old Jussi Jääskeläinen is the Latic’s current number two.
Gilks moved to Ibrox in the summer on a two-year deal after leaving Burnley but struggled to displace Wes Foderingham, only making five appearances, leaving the 34-year-old to move elsewhere in search of regular playing time. Despite his limited appearances for Rangers, fans were generally impressed with the ex-Blackpool ‘keeper’s performances and felt he was a more than capable deputy for Foderingham however signing of Alnwick, and young goalkeepers like Liam Kelly and Robby McCrorie coming through the ranks Gilks’ opportunities at Ibrox were going to be even more limited.
